Intern in the Spotlight: Lieke van Apeldoorn

Education and School:
I study Engineering: Product Design at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.

Internship type:
I am currently doing my graduation internship at FastFeetGrinded.

Assignment:
My project focuses on designing a new product made from recycled shoe materials processed by FastFeetGrinded. It’s a combination of research and developing something tangible.

Why Heilig?
A lecturer at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences introduced me to FastFeetGrinded. I decided to learn more and eventually got in touch. What immediately appealed to me was the unique approach and circular mission of FastFeetGrinded. It’s inspiring to see how committed and determined the team is to making a real impact—by using resources smarter and actively contributing to reducing waste streams.

Learning beyond the books:
I’m developing both professionally and personally here. The freedom to shape my project myself, combined with reaching out to external parties, has greatly improved my independence.

Best thing:
The way interns are truly integrated into the team. You work on real, current projects and are involved in the company’s latest developments.

Most impressive moment:
One memorable moment was when the warehouse needed to be tidied up in a short amount of time. Everyone jumped in and worked efficiently together. The team spirit and dedication I saw were truly inspiring.

Tip for new interns:
Feel free to ask questions, be curious, and share your ideas. Here, you can learn and make an impact! And bring a pair of old shoes!

If Heilig were a song:
For me, it would be “Stronger” by Kanye West, as it represents courage, resilience, and perseverance. What doesn’t kill FastFeetGrinded only makes it stronger!
